2019-2020 information available January 12th.

BIG HISTORY EXAMINES OUR PAST, EXPLAINS OUR PRESENT, AND IMAGINES OUR FUTURE

Big History is a social studies course that spans 13.8 billion years. It weaves insights from many disciplines to form a single story that helps us better understand people, civilizations, and how we are connected to everything around us.

Explore 13.8 billion years of shared history and consider the big questions about our Universe, our planet, life, and humanity. Big History weaves insights from many scientific and historical disciplines to form a single, cohesive story that can help us better understand people, civilizations, and how we are connected to everything around us.

Course Content: 10 Units Spread Over Two Years

At Odyssey Heights students have 10-11 Big History seminars over the school year (typically the first week of every month). We cover the Big History Project course content over a two year cycle. Both years start with the introductory Unit 1 “What is Big History”. Year 1 is a science focused course that starts with the Big Bang and ends after examining the beginning of life on Earth. Year 2 is a World History course that covers the start of human cultures through to the present and ending with pondering what the future may hold. Given the different focuses of each year, it is completely possible for a student to start either in Y1 or Y2 of the course - especially as the introductory unit 1 is repeated every year.

All content, including a dedicated class space, is online allowing even our students who miss school due to mental health needs to keep up with their classmates and prepare for their presentations and group discussions. All content, including videos, can be downloaded to view offline. Written unit investigations (essays) are submitted online for marking by the Big History Project.
